It started in the Netherlands 16 years ago and has grown into a legendary weekend that’s now coming to Tasmania… And I expect it’ll be unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
It’s a whisky festival. Sortof.
It’s a weekend-long party. Sortof.
It’s a retreat in the country. Sortof.
It’s golf. It’s fishing. It’s a chance to sample mountains of unique whiskies. It’s a BBQ. It’s great stories from legendary whisky makers. It’s bonfires. It’s live music. It’s all your food and drink and fun and gatherings and blind tastings and even a shuttle back and forth to the airport!
It’s probably one of the most memorable weekends you’ll ever have.
And… It’s a lot of interesting people coming together to share great spirits from around Australia and the world.
I’ve been to whisky festivals, and generally, it’s a lot of whisky makers and collectors, setting up booths and attendees wandering around with glasses, tasting whisky. Which is great. It’s a fine way to try new flavors, meet distillers, and find your new favorite whisky, and have short conversations with people too busy pouring to chat.
But Maltstock Down Under is different.
There are no booths. No lines. Nothing to spend money on once you get there. No giant, faceless crowds of gawkers.
What it is, is a hundred of your new best friends exploring the best stories and whiskies around. Distillers bring whisky to share, but it’s informal. Want to try something? Talk to the alchemist magician who actually made it. Learn how it came into being, hear the stories, and have a taste. Get to really know the people behind the Australian whisky revolution that the rest of the world is discovering, and do it in the magical southern island of Tasmania.
