Two Australian Air Force veterans had an idea. Dan Poynter and Aaron Somerville wanted to start a distillery so they built their own stills first. it’s a bit like wanting to enter the Tour de France and starting out by building your own bike. Not many people could pull it off, but these guys did in a converted garage. They built the whole thing from scratch, on their own and are now making some truly wonderful rums and whiskies.

I got to meet them at their facility, in a quiet industrial/residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Adelaide and I was truly impressed. Not only is their craftsmanship impressive, but their whisky is fantastic as well. I had a five-year-old lightly peated single malt that really stood out. Be on the lookout for Sumpoynt Whisky. It’s worth the search.
